Billabong

Penny & Eric flew off to Cairns for the day today so Penny lent us her car so that we could venture a bit further. Last time I came to Australia we visited a wildlife sanctuary called Billabong. This is just outside Townsville so after a bit of leisurely morning getup we headed out.

We arrived a Billabong and Toby had decided to have his morning nap on the way. We unpacked the car into the buggy and though it wouldn’t be long until Toby woke up and we could go on in. An hour and a half later Toby awoke from his epic nap and we were able to get further than the carpark.

We caught the tail end of the reptile show. Where they had a couple of snakes and some kind of lizard thing. Then we decided it was lunch time. We had a bit of a chat with a couple who had just travelled down from the Daintree Forest, north of Port Douglas, which got us thinking.

Then it was time for croc feeding. This talk was really informative, particularly about safety with crocodiles. I didn’t realise that only saltwater, or more correctly, estuarine crocodiles were a danger to people, so ‘freshies’ pose no danger at all. They are actually quite different.

We looked around the rest of the park, seeing the quite unique cassowary, a bird that was around when the dinosaurs roamed, dangerous snakes, which was informative, and wombats, which are huge and sleepy!

Next, a couple of park staff flew birds of prey. They were flying really low over the audience. Toby was not in the mood for sitting still and had to be taken out – what a pixie!

Back in Townsville, we found the Rockpool, which is a man made swimming around filled from the sea. We all enjoyed a swim including Toby, who does love a good splash! Then we had a compulsory beer in cbar and headed back to Penny and Eric’s. Lovely dinner chatting with them and early to bed.
