This morning we had a leisurely wake up time of 6:00am. Not having to pack down camp for one night was a luxury. We set off for a hours drive to the Okavango Delta. We arrived into s village where the locals were preparing the Mokoros for us. They are a little like punts, but less stable and made out of fibreglass / asbestos. We set off in three Mokoros two of us in each across the delta. It was very odd being in such a great expanse of water calmly drifting across. We saw a number of hippos along our route, but made sure to stay well clear because hippos and boats don’t mix.
At around lunchtime we landed on an island where we had our lunch. A upside down boat makes a great table. After lunch it was time to go for a wildlife walk around the island. Within 5 minutes we had stumbled across two elephants having a mud bath. Again being wary that we did not have the protection of a vehicle to hide in stayed up wind and out of sight of them, but it was still close enough to appreciate the magnificent animals.
Moving further round the island we saw a number of termite mounds. These apparently are so night due to the water table that termites have to build their nest above ground.
After this island expedition we headed back to the village.
Back at the campsite we all decided to make use of the pool as it was still very warm. At the pool we bumped into another group who had just arrived at the campsite. A couple of Kiwis, Americans, Canadians and Brits.
We had some sad news today that Gift was leaving us at this point and we would have a new cook for the remainder of the trip. Gift and Joe had such a repor together it’s going to be interesting to see how someone else would ever be able to big boots the Gift has left behind. For our last diner with Gift he cooked us a delicious chicken curry!
